Venetian Plaster Kelowna
Authentic lime-based Venetian plaster applied by hand in multiple burnished layers. A timeless wall and ceiling finish that adds depth, texture, and a luminous quality no paint can replicate.
(236) 301-8111Venetian plaster is a lime-based wall finish applied by hand in multiple thin layers, each burnished with a steel trowel to create a surface with genuine depth, subtle movement, and a luminosity that no paint or synthetic texture can replicate. It's one of the oldest decorative finishes in the world — dating back to ancient Rome, refined in Renaissance Venice — and it's having a strong moment in Kelowna's high-end residential and hospitality market because it delivers something genuinely different: a wall that reads as alive, not as applied.

What Is Venetian Plaster? The Material and the Method
True Venetian plaster is made from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) mixed with marble dust and natural pigments. It's applied to a primed wall surface in multiple coats — typically two to four — using a flexible stainless steel trowel in overlapping, cross-hatched strokes. Each coat is allowed to partially cure before the next is applied. The final coat is burnished while still slightly plastic, compressing the surface and creating the characteristic gloss and depth.
The burnishing process is where the skill lives. The pressure, angle, and speed of the trowel during burnishing determines whether the finish reads as matte, satin, or highly polished. A skilled plasterer can create effects ranging from rough, travertine-like texture to a surface that approaches the appearance of polished stone.
What makes Venetian plaster optically distinctive is that it's semi-transparent. Light passes into the surface, reflects off the marble dust particles at slightly different depths, and returns to the eye with a three-dimensional quality. Paint sits on the wall surface; Venetian plaster has depth within it.
Venetian Plaster Finish Options
Not all Venetian plaster looks the same — the technique can be varied to produce a wide range of finishes:
**Polished Venetian (Marmorino):** The classic high-gloss finish, burnished to a near-mirror sheen. Looks most like polished stone. Works beautifully in entry halls, bathrooms, feature walls, and luxury retail.
**Satin Venetian:** A softer burnish produces a satin sheen with visible texture and depth. Warmer and more residential than the high-polish finish. Ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, and hotel lobbies.
**Textured Venetian (Grassello):** A rougher, more artisan application showing deliberate trowel marks and variation. Rustic but refined — very popular in Okanagan wine country aesthetics, restaurants, and spa environments.
**Tinted Venetian:** Pigments are added to the lime base, producing colour with depth that shifts as light changes throughout the day. From warm ivories and ochres to deep charcoals and terracottas.
**Waxed Venetian:** A final coat of natural beeswax or carnauba wax buffed into the surface adds water resistance and a warm, organic sheen. Standard for bathrooms and kitchen feature walls.
Where Venetian Plaster Works Best in Kelowna Homes
Venetian plaster is at its best in spaces where: - Walls are a visual focal point and imperfections in drywall are already well-patched - Natural or architectural lighting rakes across the surface at an angle, activating the depth - The interior design direction is elevated, natural, or Mediterranean-influenced - The homeowner wants something that genuinely can't be replicated with paint
**Feature walls:** A single Venetian plaster wall in a living room or bedroom creates a focal point without overwhelming the space. The most popular approach in Kelowna residential projects.
**Entry halls:** First impressions matter. A polished Venetian plaster entry sets the tone for the rest of the home.
**Primary bathrooms:** Waxed Venetian plaster is water-resistant and creates a spa-like atmosphere in bathrooms. Works beautifully around freestanding tubs and behind vanities.
**Wine cellars and bars:** The natural, earthy quality of textured Venetian plaster is a perfect match for wine cellars, home bars, and entertainment spaces with an Okanagan vineyard aesthetic.
**Commercial hospitality:** Kelowna's growing restaurant and hotel sector uses Venetian plaster for feature walls, bar surrounds, and lobby finishes that convey quality without looking corporate.
Surface Preparation for Venetian Plaster
Venetian plaster is applied over drywall or existing plaster, but the substrate must be properly prepared or the finish will telegraph every imperfection beneath it. Unlike paint, which hides minor surface variation, polished Venetian plaster reveals everything — every bump, joint, and popped screw.
Our prep process for Venetian plaster:
1. **Drywall finishing:** All drywall seams, screws, and corner beads are skimmed to Level 5 finish — the highest level of drywall finish, with a full skim coat over the entire surface. This is non-negotiable for a polished result.
2. **Priming:** A tinted primer (matched to the finish plaster colour) is applied to seal the surface and provide a consistent base. Venetian plaster applied over unprimed or inconsistently primed drywall will absorb unevenly and show lap marks.
3. **First coat:** Applied thinly and cross-hatched with the trowel, this coat fills any remaining minor surface variation and begins building the depth of the finish.
4. **Second and subsequent coats:** Each coat adds depth and refines the texture. The final coat is applied at a specific consistency for burnishing.
5. **Burnishing:** The crucial final step — trowel pressure, angle, and timing during the burnish determines the final sheen and depth.
Venetian Plaster vs. Venetian Plaster Paint: What's the Difference
This is the most common question we field about this finish. 'Venetian plaster paint' — sold at hardware stores and applied with a brush or roller — is an acrylic product with texture additives that approximates the look of Venetian plaster at a fraction of the cost. It can look decent, but it doesn't behave like true lime plaster and the result is noticably different up close.
True lime-based Venetian plaster: - Breathes (allows moisture vapour transmission, which prevents mould behind the surface) - Has genuine optical depth from marble dust particles at different depths - Develops a harder, more durable surface through the carbonation process as lime cures - Can be repaired invisibly by a skilled plasterer - Improves in appearance over time as the lime fully carbonates
Acrylic 'Venetian plaster paint': - Does not breathe - Has surface texture but no optical depth - Durability depends on the acrylic formulation - Difficult to repair invisibly - Does not improve with age
For a feature wall where you're going to live with the result for a decade, the difference is worth it.
